The fisherman's culture has for 300 years been the main source of income for immigrants from the Azores, who founded many of today's cities along the coast line in Santa Catarina. Today they live in a curious relationship with a modern and growing society based on tourism, where they supply fresh fish to the region while many of the family members are working in the tourist sector and younger people enter universities and then move on to larger cities. Maybe these grayish fishermen no longer have to confront the sea for a catch, but they continue because the sea and the fishing are deeply rooted in their blood.
