From the Beaches to the Mountain Range The region offers modern cities with interesting history and culture, and beautiful mountain areas with plenty of rivers and waterfalls. Sao Francisco do Sul on the island Babitonga is the oldest city in Santa Catarina. Its city center contains many older and well maintained buildings, accompanied with several museums. Joinville, with 450 000 inhabitants, is the largest city in Santa Catarina. It was first settled by Germans during the mid 1900th century and has developed into the largest industrial pool in the state. The city is famous for its yearly Dance Festival, for its many parks full of flowers, and for its German heritage. Corupa is a small town some 15 miles west of Joinville. It is located along the main road on the way up to the mountain area, and is famous for its large forest area, protected by law, where around 70 waterfalls of different kinds and sizes are located. On the top of the mountain range is Campo Alegre situated, a small town nicknamed The Paradise of the Mountain. It is a beautiful landscape that surrounds the town, dominated by the characteristic pine tree Aracuaria. Further to the west is Sao Bento do Sul, the largest city in the mountain area and center of the states furniture industry. Rio Negrinho is
situated close by and is famous for the old steam driven train “Maria
Fumaça”. The train makes tours to the
neighboring city according on a weekly schedule. |
