Joinville, with 450 000 inhabitants, is the largest city in Santa Catarina. The Germans came here during the latter part of the 19th century, and their influence can be recognized by the architecture of the city, the heavy industry focused on export, and the beer festivals. The city is also known for its Russian ballet school and the yearly Dance Festival, the flower parks, the museums, and not least the small harbor in antique style where the ferry line leaves for Sao Fansisco do Sul.
